Finding the right home improvement dealer.

We’ve all heard horror stories about home improvement projects. Fortunately, with a little effort, you can avoid a bad experience of your own. Before enlisting a home improvement dealer or contractor, be sure they have a reputation for quality workmanship and honesty. All it takes is a little homework:

  • Ask friends and relatives for the names of companies they would recommend
  • Check the references of contractors to see if former customers are satisfied with their work
  • Consult your local chamber of commerce or the Better Business Bureau for any information they might have on prospective contractors

Before deciding on a contractor, you should get bids from two or three competitors. Make sure that each bid is based on the same specifications and the same grade of materials. If one of the bids is substantially higher or lower than the others, find out why. In the end, it’s your money that is being spent, and it’s important that you trust the people who are doing the work.
