Planning a Vacation on a Budget

Vacation Vacation season is right around the corner, and with many people making an effort to spend less and save more, planning a vacation this year may call for a different approach. Here are some useful budget travel tips to keep in mind when planning your vacation this year:

  1. Despite airlines reducing flight schedules and offering fewer seats for sale, there are many good deals out there right now. Timing is of the essence when hunting for bargains on tickets. A bit of advice is to book your trip on a Tuesday at midnight, or right after midnight, in the time zone where your airline is based. Many discount tickets that were reserved for a short period of time and get cancelled typically end up becoming available right around this time on late Tuesday or early Wednesday. Also, buying airfare from a smaller, secondary airport can help you save on airfare costs.

  2. Consider traveling by train or bus. Traveling via train and bus started to bolster when gas prices were higher, but the trend is continuing to climb as a result of consumers feeling the pinch from economic pressures. The benefits of traveling via train include no security lines and spacious seating—plus, you can conveniently plug in your laptop or recharge your cell phone. If you prefer to travel by bus, you can end up saving an extreme amount of money since some bus trips can cost as little as $1 if you plan far enough in advance.

  3. Research online specials, and sign up for last minute deals if you can wait. There are many specials that can easily be found online for airline tickets, hotel rooms, car rentals, and more. All-inclusive vacation specials can be found online, and an all-inclusive vacation can be a great way to save money.

  4. Share a condo with family members or friends. Responsibilities can be divided among the individuals or groups staying in the condo, which allows more time for everyone to enjoy the vacation. Also, your expenses will be less because you’ll be sharing the total cost of vacation expenses with individuals staying in the condo.

  5. Consider a vacation rental house swap. You can save money on lodging plus there are fewer arrangements you would have to make than if you stayed at a hotel. A vacation rental house swap can be a convenient and cost-effective alternative to staying in a hotel.
With travel discounts and accommodation deals more readily available than usual, this year may be the year to not skip out on a much needed vacation!
