Fun Summertime Activities for Your Family

Summertime Activities School is out for the summer, and this provides opportunities to spend fun-filled, quality time with your family. With the days being warmer and longer, outdoor activities are an easy way to get your family together in a carefree and even inexpensive manner. Here are some activities that you can enjoy as a family over the summer:

  1. Go on a picnic at a park in your local area. Keep it simple by picking up sandwiches, snacks, and supplies from a deli or grocery store on your way to your picnic destination. Pack a cooler with refreshments and frozen treats such as popsicles or ice cream sandwiches. Bring along blankets and folding lawn chairs so you can sit and eat comfortably. Spice up your outing by bringing a kite, soccer ball, Frisbee, or any type of transportable item, and make up a game that challenges everyone in a fun and healthy way.

  2. Go on a family bike ride. Find a scenic path in your area that is fairly easy to navigate and designed for families. Bring a camera to stop and take pictures of the scenic views. After your journey, the pictures can serve as a reminder of your family outing. Be sure to take the proper safety measures such as wearing helmets to prevent injuries.

  3. Find a safe walking trail and go on a nature hike. This can be a fascinating experience because there is so much to see and enjoy in nature. Wear comfortable shoes and clothing, and carry a backpack with snacks and water.

  4. Go fishing. Get a few fishing poles and bait, and take turns trying to catch fish at a nearby lake.

  5. Make or ride some waves. Go swimming at a recreation center, or visit a water park. Enjoy the sun, but remember to apply sunscreen.

  6. Visit your local zoo or an animal farm where the animals can be fed. Admission is inexpensive, and there’s more to do than visit the animals, such as taking a tour or riding the train. Activities that involve animals are not only entertaining, but they provide educational experiences as well.

  7. Go camping. Research nearby camp sites that accommodate families. Pack lightly and bring camping essentials, such as a transportable barbecue pit and flashlight. Make smores and enjoy telling stories around the camp fire.

  8. Attend a local carnival where there is entertainment for everyone in the family to enjoy. The activities at carnivals—going on rides and playing games for prizes—contribute to long-lasting entertainment.

  9. On a rainy day, take advantage of fun and inexpensive indoor activities, such as bowling, seeing a movie, or visiting a museum or science center. Some places may offer passes at discounted rates for the summer season.

  10. Take advantage of your very own backyard. Some things you can do include planting a garden, building a clubhouse, playing sports or games such as tag, and making a bird feeder or bug collector. Summertime is grilling season so barbecuing with your family is a good way to get everyone together without having to leave your home.
The summer months give way to a wide variety of favorable activities for the family. The benefit of outdoor activities in the summer months is that they are typically inexpensive and can be enjoyed by all members of the family.
