Preparing Your Home for Fall

Preparing For Fall Summer is coming to a close, which means that cooler weather will be here soon. Now is a great time to start getting your home ready for the fall season. Here are some tips that will help you prepare your home for fall:

  1. Make sure your heating system is working correctly and safely. Air filters should be changed three to four times during the cooler season to prevent unhealthy air from circulating around your home. It’s a good idea to have a heating and cooling specialist look over your system once a year during the fall season.

  2. Have your roof inspected before the cold weather sets in to make sure it is in good condition. You should look for missing or rotting shingles, in addition to checking the gutters to make sure they’re free of leaves and debris. Any broken gutters and downspouts should be repaired. Also, if there are dead or overgrown tree limbs hanging over your house, now is the time to trim them to avoid future damage.

  3. Winterize your pipes. Even though the official start of winter is a few months away, it’s better to take care of doing this far enough in advance so you’re fully prepared when the colder weather strikes. To winterize your pipes, start off by inspecting the pipes under your home to find the ones that need insulating. Then measure the section to insulate, cut that amount of insulation, and wrap it around the pipe.

  4. Look over your deck. Take your patio furniture indoors beforehand so you can make sure to do a thorough check. If your deck has never been treated, now is a good time to do it. It will help to keep your deck in good condition for a longer period of time.

  5. Flush your underground sprinkler system before it is cold enough for the water to freeze. The process involves blowing air into pipes to displace leftover water. Water lines are typically only six to eight inches below the ground, and they freeze easily. If they freeze and then burst, the repair situation could be a costly one.
Preparing your home for fall will help keep your home in good condition and give you peace-of-mind during the cooler months.
