Credit Cards—The Advantages & Disadvantages

Credit Cards There are many benefits to qualifying for and using credit cards, but there are also disadvantages to consider. When credit cards are not used appropriately, the implications can create a challenging financial situation. Here is some information on the advantages and disadvantages of credit cards:

Advantages
  1. Credit cards can act as a convenience and give you the power to purchase goods in a timely manner. They can be thought of as a short-term loan for a purchase that you do not have the necessary resources for at the time. They are especially convenient in an emergency situation that requires immediate payment.

  2. Credit cards provide some safety benefits. When you deal with smaller quantities of cash, you minimize the anxieties that can come along with carrying large sums of money. Also, credit cards offer protection under the Consumer Credit Act, and you can often get your money back in a fraudulent purchase that you would be unable to do with any other payment method.

  3. Credit cards have benefits other than those that relate to purchasing power. They help coordinate receipts for tax purposes. Credit cards also offer incentive benefits such as frequent flyer miles or credit toward future purchases.
Disadvantages
  1. One of the biggest disadvantages of credit cards is the debt that can accumulate from overuse and charging more than you can afford to pay down in a timely manner. Many consumers view credit cards as a way to extend their income. This perspective causes people to over-charge and eventually accumulate debt that becomes hard to manage.

  2. Monthly interest charges can cost you more money. The monthly interest charges you accrue can significantly increase your balance and defeat the purpose of using a credit card because you end up paying more for your purchases. The interest credit card companies charge can be a major detriment and prolong the amount of time it takes to pay down your balances.

  3. Too many credit cards can be a disadvantage. Resist the temptation to read credit card offers you receive in the mail and sign up for new cards. Less is more when it comes to credit cards, and you’ll have an easier time managing your usage and debt with fewer cards.
How you approach and deal with credit cards significantly impacts your financial situation. When you are in control of how you use your credit cards, you will find that the advantages far outweigh the disadvantages.
