Cold & Flu Season Hits Early

Flu Season Have you started taking precautions to keep yourself from getting sick this cold and flu season? There are simple things you can do to prevent the spread of germs and keep yourself healthy. Here are some steps you can take to prevent yourself from getting sick this season:

  1. Wash your hands regularly. Washing your hands before eating, after visiting the restroom, and coming in contact with a sick person will help stop germs from spreading. Another way to prevent germs from spreading is to cough into the crux of your elbow rather than into your hands. Keeping a hand sanitizer nearby and using it regularly is another way to get rid of germs.

  2. Disinfect surfaces and objects that are touched frequently. This is especially important when objects are shared and multiple people come into contact with the surfaces on a regular basis. Objects such as cell phones and computers should be disinfected frequently. Door handles, faucets, and kitchen and bathroom countertops are surfaces that should be wiped down often. It’s also a good idea to disinfect tables in lunchrooms and restaurants before you eat.

  3. Minimize stress and get enough sleep. Stress and lack of sleep can take a toll on your immune system and make you more susceptible to colds and the flu. When you take good care of yourself, your immune system becomes stronger and is better equipped to fight off viruses that cause illnesses.

  4. Maintain a healthy diet and exercise. Fruits and vegetables are packed with the vitamins your body needs to boost your immunity and fight off viruses. Some immune-boosting foods include citrus fruits, leafy greens and fish. Exercising helps rid your body of toxins and strengthens your immune system, so it’s another good way to keep yourself healthy.

  5. Talk with your doctor. Your doctor can help you determine what the best alternatives are for you and your family to utilize in order to avoid catching a cold or the flu. It’s a good idea to ask your doctor about getting a flu shot and taking over-the-counter preventative medicines.
Prevention is one of the easiest ways to stay healthy. Taking small steps to prevent the spread of germs and strengthen your immune system can help you fight off any cold and flu bugs that come your way this season.
