Annika, a four year old girl in Seattle,
Washington, suffers from Dravet Syndrome, a rare disease that causes major
seizures. She is not able to speak, but her parents can understand the other
ways Annika communicates so they are able to explain her needs and wants. What
Annika wanted and wished for was a sensory playroom, and American Equity
Mortgage was happy to help grant that wish!
A sensory playroom is a controlled environment that has toys, equipment and
textures to help stimulate her senses. Annika’s special playroom is complete
with a 36” vibrating ladybug, a tunnel, ball bit, a tent castle with flags and
a PhysioRoll ball. Her walls are colorful and have a chalkboard,
impact-resistant mirrors and special curtains as well as mats, rugs, unique
lighting fixtures, musical instruments and more! The room was specifically
designed for Annika and her developmental needs.
This playroom will help Annika learn, increase awareness and positive
behaviors while also enhancing skills such as hand/eye
coordination, cause and effect and sensory development. It is a room where she
will discover new things and hopefully learn to communicate better - skills she
will carry with her throughout her life.
American Equity Mortgage is proud to have helped the Make-A-Wish foundation
make Annika’s wish come true.
