AEM Works to Find a Cure for Breast Cancer
The view ahead Breast cancer is a disease that can happen to anyone. As many as 1 in 8 women will have breast cancer at some point in their lives and 1 in 35 women will die from it. The Komen Race for the Cure® raises funds and awareness for the fight against breast cancer, celebrates its survivors and honors those who lost their battle against this terrible disease.

The Komen Race for the Cure® took place on Saturday, June 13, 2009, in downtown St. Louis. American Equity Mortgage was excited to co-sponsor and join Team Breadhead, the team of St. Louis radio morning show host, Cornbread.

Team Breadhead was over 6,100 members large, 50 of which were AEM employees, and raised over $189,000 for the cause! Team Breadhead is the largest team in Komen Race history, and we were very proud to be a part of it!

Overall, the St. Louis race had over 66,136 total runners and walkers, 4,761 breast cancer survivors, 1,030 registered teams and raised over $3.25 million for breast cancer research, treatment and prevention programs. The honorary chairperson at this year’s event was “Today” show anchor, The view behind Hoda Kotb, who is also a breast cancer survivor.

Angie Santino, Account Executive with American Equity Mortgage, walked the 5K with her family and commented, “The Komen Race was an amazing experience. There were thousands of people there to support a great cause. Seeing the number of survivors really hit home with my family and me. Unfortunately, breast cancer runs in our family and we have lost our grandmother and aunt from the disease.”

At American Equity Mortgage, we understand the importance of giving back to the community, and we were honored to have participated in such an inspiring event.
